One inevitability in life that no one can escape is death. It’s a universal experience that prompts individuals to reflect on their own lives and contemplate the changes they wish to make. Today, I received the news of the loss of an old friend, Steve. While we hadn’t spoken in a while, I had the chance recently, but due to budget constraints, we chose to stick to our planned route. Little did I know that it would be the last opportunity.

During my formative years, I embraced my identity as a geek and nerd. However, leaving home introduced me to a group of friends, the “gobs,” who shattered my shell and provided a sense of belonging. Each friend played a pivotal role in shaping who I am today. Among them, Steve, our King Lear, stood out.

Steve was socially awkward at times, uniquely positive, and had the remarkable ability to brighten a room effortlessly. Unlike my ongoing efforts, he could radiate positivity by simply being himself. There are no words to adequately convey how much his authentic self contributed to my personal growth. The world may not fully grasp the loss it suffered in July of 2014.

Rest In Peace, Steve. The world may never know a more caring and kindly heart than yours. Your impact on those around you, including me, is immeasurable, and your memory will forever be cherished.
