As previously mentioned, my foray into the tabletop gaming realm was facilitated by games like Star Wars, Earthdawn, and the Mage game. These initial experiences were crucial in introducing me to the diverse world of tabletop gaming. The patient and experienced game masters, coupled with helpful and encouraging players, made for a well-balanced immersion into this new realm. Those early games featured a rich diversity of character classes and abilities, allowing me to feel truly part of the group.

Around Halloween, Terry initiated a one-off game that evolved into a memorable campaign set in the Dark Ages across Europe. The game was uniquely mine, revolving around Vidicous, the main character later adopted for Seeds of Aether. Vidicous, a knight of mixed Irish and English heritage, embraced the Ventrue clan for vengeance after his family was murdered. Terry’s storytelling emphasized character development, creating a narrative that spanned centuries, delving into themes of vengeance, sacrifice, and redemption.

Blue, another game master, focused on modern times, emphasizing the need for players to have backup characters ready. The stories centered around character development, with a particular focus on a Ventrue shrouded in vengeance. The game weaved a tale of familial loss, companionship, and the pursuit of justice, culminating in a return after a century in hiding.

Despite the significance of these games in my gaming history, the Hunter game introduced a different challenge. Creating characters based on character sheets proved to be a daunting endeavor, and while it didn’t deter my interest in gaming, it set the stage for future reflections.

Reflecting on my experiences with different game masters, I recognize Terry as the master of campaigns, weaving intricate stories driven by character choices. Blue excelled in creating intense and exhilarating sessions where character survival was paramount. Maz possessed the gift of crafting meticulously detailed scenes and events, contributing to the excitement in every story.

Although I no longer engage in gaming due to a combination of burnout and shifting priorities, the lessons learned from these games continue to influence my writing. Terry shaped my understanding of characters, while Maz inspired the worlds in which these characters thrive. Every story, I believe, needs an element of excitement, and that was Blue’s contribution.
